FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

  1. How long should a mother breastfeed?
A mother and her baby should breastfeed for as long as they wish to breastfeed. Exclusive breastfeeding is sufficient to support optimal growth and development for approximately the first 6 months of life and provides continuing protection against diarrhea and respiratory tract infection.
All the benefits of human milk - including nutritional and health - continue for as long as your baby receives your milk. Many of the health benefits of human milk are dose related, that is, the longer the baby receives human milk, the greater are the benefits.

  2. Why does my baby suddenly want to nurse constantly?
Your baby may have been breastfeeding at regular intervals, but now, it feels as though you are spending the whole day with the baby at your breast! There can be many reasons why your baby has increased breastfeeding. These might include that your baby is experiencing normal "frequency days" or your baby is fighting an illness.
Sometimes a sudden increase in breastfeeding can precede a baby getting sick. Increased breastfeeding can provide valuable protection from illness, as your baby will be receiving antibodies and immunities that your body has made especially for your baby during this time.

  3. How do I know that my baby is getting enough milk from breastfeeding?
Babies vary in their eating and diaper habits. Breastfeeding mothers are advised to watch for certain signs that their babies are getting enough milk. These signs are as follows:
    • at least six wet diapers per day and two to five loose yellow stools per day, depending on baby's age. (Stools should be loose and have a yellowish color to them. Be sure stools are not white or clay-colored.)
    • steady weight gain, after the first week of age.
    • pale yellow urine, not deep yellow or orange.
    • sleeping well, yet baby looks alert and healthy when awake.

  4. How Can I Increase My Milk Supply?
Increasing your milk supply can be accomplished in many different ways -- from feeding your baby directly at the breast or stimulating supply with a breast pump. The more the baby suckles the more supply you have. You should never assume that your milk supply could not be rejuvenated, despite the length of time that has gone by without stimulation.
Mother should increase her diet intake.

  5. I am not sure if my milk has come in yet - how do I know?
In most women, their milk comes somewhere between the second and sixth day birth. It is a different experience for each mom.. As long as you feel that nursing is going well and that your baby is having the right amount of wet and dirty diapers (and changing in color from tar-like and sticky black to a lighter brown and becoming mustard yellow), your milk is probably come in. If you have any concerns or other questions about breastfeeding, call your lactation nurse.

  6. Help! Is there anything I can do? My nipples are hurting.
Some tenderness in the first few days is normal. Try using a some hind milk to help. The cause of many sore nipples is the latch. Ensuring that your baby is latched on well can make all the difference. Check with your lactation nurse for the correct attachment.
If the latch is good you continue to have pain, it is time to see your doctor or a good lactation consultant. Don’t worry…sore nipples will heal
